Your company has won the contract and you have been selected to lead the new project. Your boss calls you in to her office and shares the news — and it goes something like this: “Congratulations. Here is your project, here is your budget and here is your schedule.”
But wait! You didn’t have a chance to ask crucial questions about the scope of the project during the bidding process! Your boss explains that they decided not to ask many questions because it might help the competition.
But wait! You can tell at a glance that the schedule is way too tight! Your boss explains that she is certain you can get it done on time.
But wait! There is no way you can complete this flawed project on this tight schedule with the limited funding you’ve been given! Your boss asks if she should find someone else to lead the project.
“Don’t worry,” she says. “We’ll make it all up on change orders.”
For many project managers, this is the real-life world of project management. There is a better way. It involves understanding the connections within projects, and how using those connections can help you plan projects more effectively. In this course you will learn how to identify problems in a scope statement. You will learn how to turn a scope statement into a WBS. You will learn how use the WBS to identify project activities. Finally, you will learn how to use the project activities to develop a draft schedule and budget that are consistent with the scope of the project.
